How to play Chess
Checkmate the enemy king: attack it so that no move escapes.
These are the rules for the PlayBurst version. Other versions may play differently.
Rules and controls
1. How the pieces move
Rooks in straight lines, bishops diagonally, the queen both, knights in an L, the king one square, pawns forward one and capture diagonally.
2. Check
When your king is attacked you must answer it: move the king, block the line, or take the attacker.
3. Castle safely
The king and rook must not have moved, and the squares between them must be empty. The king cannot castle out of check, through an attacked square or into check.
4. Promote a pawn
A pawn reaching the far rank can become a queen, rook, bishop or knight. Tap the destination to choose a queen, or hold it to open the promotion choices.
